magine me singing “Yes, you are creative, the bible tells me so” to the tune of “Jesus Loves Me” as you read this… because I want share a quick note about how I know with 100% certainty that you are creative. (Guess I had that song stuck in my head since it’s valentines week… and everyone is talking about love!)

One of the stories I share in the book is that of my friend Gabby, who works in the field of architecture. Her firm designs plans for communities and businesses that help layout the various elements of landscaping, plants, sidewalks, fountains, etc. It’s as creative as creativity gets in my opinion, but Gabby still doesn’t see herself as creative. (I won’t spoil her story, because it’s in the book you can now pre-order here.)

Just the other day, I had another friend that asked me at dinner this question “How do you know that creativity is a biblical concept.” And my answer was really simple.

“Because it’s written ALL throughout the Bible!”

Not only is create the fifth word in the entire bible, but a deviation of that word is found in 60 of the 66 books. It’s repeated in some form or fashion over a thousand times (words like create, make, formed, designed, etc) from Genesis to Revelation.

Creativity Quote

But there’s one overarching concept that I bring up time and time again when talking to people about their creativity.

If you were going to introduce your best friend to someone, what would you say about them? Think about that for a minute. If you had only 1 sentence to describe your best friend, what would be the first thing you would mention when talking about them? Likely it would be the most distinct and apparent characteristic they embody. (Ex: He’s the nicest person you’d ever meet, they are one of the most talented musicians I’ve ever met, she’s can calculate the square root of six digit numbers in her head!)

Okay, I don’t know about the last one haha, just thought if you knew someone who can do that, you’d probably mention that.

Now let’s go to the bible…

The bible speaks over and over about how we are made in the image of God (see Genesis 1:27, Gen 5:12, 1 Corinth 11:7, James 3:9, Colossians 1:15, and it goes on and on). That’s the critical piece that we as humans must first recognize.

And if we’re made in the image of God… then what is the first characteristic we see of God?

He. Is. Creative!

Which means…

If the first thing we talk about when we introduce someone to a good friend, is often the most distinguishable or best feature of the person we’re introducing them to, then maybe God is most distinguishable (or best known) by his creative ability to make something out of nothing.

Being made in that image, means that we inherently are creative as well. So there you have it… Yes, you are creative! The bible tells me so.
